small stones – January 4, 2017

dear sister
late though you were
(four days past Christmas)
& while it was lovely to see you
(since it has been months)
why oh why did you bring in
the crud?

now we are all ill
from your ill-timed visit
(a few more days for you to get well
would have suited us all just fine)

small stones – January 2, 2017

for the first time, I truly saw your frailty
my once strong poppa now so brittle —
you’d fallen, dizzy from too much cold medicine
and brother had to help you down the stairs
I hadn’t worried about losing you
until then – now I am a hawk, watching
over your every move, afraid —
I’d spent so many years away from you
I don’t want to lose you so soon

like small, flat stones skipped
across a lake, I’ve skipped
these stones across the world-wide lake
in hopes of inspiring not just myself
but others, to mindfully be

Thank you for  joining me,  Satya and Kaspa for their Awake August 2016 and writing small stones throughout the month. While I didn’t write small stones every day, I did write them when I was inspired, which I found more important – quality over quantity. I hope you’ve enjoyed this process and that some of you did indeed join in. Blessings to you all. ~Lori

I’ve watched you grow
my little darlings
rounder, bigger still
and today, your sweetness
has touched my tongue
cantaloupe season has begun

long day of blistering heat
the need to shut self away
a retreat into shadows
where cool steelness led
to calm stillness
